FARM VET SERVICES — HERD HEALTH PLANS

Herd & Flock Health Plans

A herd health plan is a planned programme for keeping your cattle or sheep healthy, built around your own farm rather than a standard template. Farm Vet Services offers herd and flock health planning for dairy, beef and sheep farms across Northern Ireland through its five branches.

What is in a herd health plan?

On beef farms, our plans are described as structured herd health plans built around your farm’s specific fertility, nutrition and disease-prevention needs. They aim to reduce outbreaks of pneumonia, scour, lameness and Johne’s disease.

On dairy farms, the work includes fertility management, dry cow management, youngstock health with vaccination scheduling, and mineral monitoring. For sheep, it includes ram fertility testing, ewe mineral profiling, and faecal worm and fluke egg counts to guide treatment decisions.

Why plan ahead rather than wait for a problem?

Farm Vet Services aims to be just as effective at preventing disease as treating it. Regular veterinary involvement can help identify fertility and health issues earlier, and give farmers clearer information for day-to-day herd decisions.

How do my farm records fit in?

Our vets use VetImpress, a digital herd management platform, alongside your farm records. It lets our team log treatments, fertility results, mobility scores and lab work, so the information behind each visit is up to date. Routine jobs such as vaccinations, dosing and ear tagging can be handled through our Vet-Tech service, which keeps vet time free for clinical work, emergencies and herd health planning.

Which tests and checks can support a plan?

Testing helps a plan rest on evidence. Our faecal egg count service helps inform a parasite control plan tailored to your farm. Fertility work includes scanning and our Bull MOT. Our BVD guide explains one of the diseases that can affect herd fertility.

Which branch should I contact?

To talk about a plan for your herd or flock, contact your local branch directly: Clogher, Templepatrick, Lisnaskea, Trillick or Randalstown. Branch details are on our branch page, and you can also contact us. If you are new to the practice, you can ask for a free farm visit. See our dairy, beef and sheep pages for the full range of services.
