BULTAVO 3 – 50 Dose Vaccine (Sheep & Cattle)

What is BULTAVO 3?

BULTAVO 3 is an inactivated vaccine against bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) for use in sheep and cattle. Each 1 mL dose contains inactivated BTV-3 antigen with aluminium hydroxide and Quil-A adjuvants to stimulate protective immunity. The product is supplied as a 50-dose multi-dose vial for efficient flock and herd vaccination under veterinary direction.

Indications & expected response

Sheep: active immunisation to reduce viraemia and prevent clinical signs and mortality due to BTV-3. Onset of immunity in sheep is 3 weeks after completion of the primary course.
Cattle: active immunisation against BTV-3; onset and duration of immunity are not established at this time. Vaccination programmes should be planned by your veterinary surgeon in line with local risk and national policy.

Dosing schedule & administration
  • Shake gently before use and warm to 15–25 °C to aid handling.

  • Sheep (SC): 1 mL subcutaneous single dose from 1 month of age in naïve animals.

  • Cattle (IM): 1 mL intramuscular, two doses 3 weeks apart from 1 month of age in naïve animals.

  • Use standard aseptic technique. Use the vial immediately after first broach; do not repeatedly puncture over multiple sessions.

Use in breeding & youngstock

The vaccine may be used during pregnancy. Safety during lactation and in breeding males has not been fully established; the responsible veterinarian should assess benefit–risk for these groups. Maternal antibodies can interfere with vaccine response; they commonly wane by around 3 months in lambs and 2.5 months in calves, so scheduling should consider colostral status.

Storage, handling & shelf life
  • Refrigerate at 2–8 °C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.

  • Shelf life unopened: typically 24 months.

  • After first opening: use within 10 hours.

  • Transport in a validated cool chain and keep chilled on farm until administration.

Withholding period

Meat & offal: Zero days. There is no stated milk withdrawal; follow your vet’s advice and national guidance.

Safety & expected reactions

Transient injection-site swelling and mild fever can occur. Vaccinate healthy animals only and plan the basic immunisation to ensure protection is established before vector season.

Stewardship & policy notes

BULTAVO 3 is available under emergency use provisions. Implementation must align with current national vaccination policy for bluetongue. Work with your veterinary surgeon to integrate vaccination with vector control and movement planning as part of a regional disease-risk strategy.

Pack contents

One 50-dose (50 mL) multi-dose vial with elastomer stopper suitable for standard vaccine draw-up equipment.

FAQs

What ages can be vaccinated?
Sheep and cattle can start from 1 month of age if naïve, taking into account potential interference from maternal antibodies and local risk periods.

Sheep develop protection from 3 weeks after the primary vaccination course is completed. Cattle’s onset is not established, so plan programmes with your vet.

Is there a withdrawal period?
Zero-day withdrawal for meat/offal.

Is it a fridge item?
Yes—store and transport at 2–8 °C and do not freeze. Use the vial within 10 hours of opening.
