What is Startvac?

Startvac is a polyvalent inactivated vaccine for cattle (cows and heifers) used as part of a herd plan to reduce the incidence of subclinical mastitis and the incidence and severity of clinical mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, coliforms and coagulase-negative staphylococci. Immunity develops across the programme from around day 13 after the first injection until roughly day 78 after the third injection.

When and how to vaccinate
  • Route & dose: 2 mL by deep intramuscular injection in the neck; alternate sides between doses.

  • Primary course per lactation:

    1. 45 days before the expected calving date

    2. 35 days later (≈10 days before calving)

    3. 62 days after the second dose (≈52 days post-calving)

  • Repeat the full programme for each gestation.

  • Allow the vial to warm to +15 to +25 °C and shake before use. Use aseptic technique.

Where Startvac fits in a mastitis plan

Vaccination should sit alongside milking routine discipline, dry-off management, housing & bedding hygiene, nutrition, cow comfort and monitoring. Whole-herd immunisation is recommended in herds with recurring mastitis pressure to improve udder-health outcomes and milk quality.

Safety, use in breeding animals & expected reactions
  • Can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

  • Transient injection-site swelling or a short-lived temperature rise may occur.

  • Contains mineral oil adjuvant; accidental self-injection requires urgent medical attention. Keep out of reach of children and follow safe handling protocols.

Storage, broach life & withdrawal
  • Refrigerate 2–8 °C, protect from light, do not freeze.

  • After first opening, use within 10 hours (store during use at 15–25 °C).

  • Meat/milk withdrawal: Zero days.

Pack sizes offered
  • 5 Dose (10 mL) and 25 Dose (50 mL) multi-dose vials.

Good practice tips

Use clean automatic vaccinators with a vented draw-off spike for accurate 2 mL dosing. Keep a cold-chain to farm and during sessions. Record batch/expiry against animal groups to support pharmacovigilance.
