Footvax

Footvax
What is Footvax?
Footvax is a fluid, oil-adjuvanted multi-serotype vaccine for sheep, containing antigens from 10 serotypes of Dichelobacter nodosus. It is used within flock lameness control plans to help prevent footrot and reduce lesion severity, supporting lower lameness prevalence when combined with good hygiene, prompt treatment, and culling policies.
Indications & benefits
Aids protection against footrot across multiple circulating serotypes.
Helps reduce the incidence and severity of clinical disease and supports recovery when integrated with management measures such as footbathing and careful trimming where advised.
Dose, route & injection site
Dose: 1 mL per sheep.
Route: Subcutaneous injection.
Injection site: underneath a skinfold in the neck, at least 5–8 cm behind the ear, to avoid muscle and nerves. Use sterile equipment and strict asepsis for every animal.
Vaccination programme
Primary course: give two injections 6 weeks apart.
Revaccination: where challenge is persistent or high, revaccinate at approximately 6-monthly intervals or as advised by your veterinary surgeon to maintain control through risk periods.
Timing & flock management tips
Plan courses so the second primary dose precedes the main risk period (e.g., warm, wet months or housing).
Record batch/expiry and animal groups. Keep a cold-chain from delivery through administration.
Combine vaccination with prompt treatment of clinical cases, rigorous biosecurity for bought-in stock, and proven lameness-reduction measures.
Important restrictions & precautions
Do not vaccinate within 6–8 weeks of shearing.
Avoid vaccinating ewes from 4 weeks before lambing to 4 weeks after lambing.
Not for use in lactating dairy sheep producing milk for human consumption.
Vaccinate healthy sheep only; transient injection-site swellings can occur. Use an appropriate needle gauge/length and change needles frequently to minimise reactions.
Storage, handling & broach life
Refrigerate at 2–8 °C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
Allow to reach 15–25 °C before use and shake thoroughly during sessions to maintain a uniform suspension.
Use promptly after broaching and avoid repeated punctures across multiple days. Dispose of sharps and waste responsibly.
Pack sizes offered
20 ml (approx. 20 doses), 50 ml (approx. 50 doses), and 250 ml (approx. 250 doses) multi-dose vials to suit different flock sizes and timing strategies.
Withdrawal period
Meat & offal: Zero days.
FAQs
How soon should I see benefits?
Protection develops after completion of the two-dose primary course; schedule doses so immunity is in place before high-risk periods.
Can I vaccinate during pregnancy?
Avoid vaccinating from 4 weeks before lambing to 4 weeks after lambing. Plan courses earlier in gestation under veterinary guidance.
Does vaccination replace footbathing and treatment?
No—use Footvax as part of a 5-point lameness plan, including biosecurity, prompt treatment, culling chronic cases, and environmental management.
